Research Areas

World-class Research and Development is the driving force behind every product we make. Abbott Nutrition strong commitment to science and innovation has enabled us to pinpoint emerging patient needs and nutrition solutions. We are behind some of the world's most trusted names in pediatric, adult, healthy living, and performance nutrition products.

Abbott Nutrition accomplishes its R&D mission through teams of discovery, product development, and clinical and analytical scientists.

The sole purpose of Abbott Nutrition Research and Development is to translate nutrition science into effective products for every stage of life. Our success began with Franklin infant formula first produced in 1925. We hit another benchmark in 1973 with the first scientifically formulated medical nutritional product for adults.

From these beginnings, Abbott Nutrition Research and Development has become a leader in creating nutritionals for infants, children, and adults worldwide. We are also leading the way in producing disease-specific, specialty nutrition for those with diabetes, renal disease, pulmonary disease, malnutrition, cancer, and other conditions.

Abbott Nutrition maintains Core Laboratory Facilities in the United States, as well as facilities in Granada, Spain, and the Republic of Singapore. Additionally, laboratories are maintained at all Abbott Nutrition manufacturing sites around the globe. All our facilities are equipped with state of-the-art analytical testing and data processing capabilities. Abbott Nutrition’s Global Analytical Research Facilities are dedicated to developing innovative methodologies relative to nutritional analysis. Abbott Nutrition is a respected leader in the field of nutritional analysis as demonstrated by the following activities:

  • Working closely with the National Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety (NINFS) and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention to provide scientific and technical support for developing policy, law, standards, and regulations on nutrition and for food safety.

  • Collaborating with the National Dairy Testing Center (NDTC) to help the Chinese government in its mobilization effort to revise its nutrient analysis methods for infant formulas.

  • Sponsoring and leading efforts within the infant formula industry to help modernize nutrient analysis methods for infant and adult nutritionals. Workgroups on carbohydrates/sugars, fat-soluble vitamins/water-soluble vitamins, major and minor trace minerals, proteins/amino acids, total fats/fatty acids, "orphan" nutrients, sampling, and best practices were formed at the AOAC International Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas, USA, in September 2008 to address key issues.
