CAN SPECIALISED NUTRITION IMPACT SURVIVAL?
Ricardo Rueda, MD, PhD
Abbott Nutrition Research and Development
Dr Rueda reviews the clinical benefits of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation in mitigating skeletal muscle atrophy or weakness in cachexia, hospitalization, and ageing. Mechanisms of HMB action include both reduction of muscle protein breakdown and enhancement of muscle protein synthesis. Recent studies show that basal circulating levels of HMB decline with age, and that HMB levels are positively correlated with % appendicular lean mass and muscle grip strength in young and old adults. These cross-sectional data shed further light on the value of HMB supplementation for helping support muscle function in older adults.
