Allergy and Nutrition—Pediatric Nutrition Matters

Kate Swan, MD
Consultant in Children’s Allergy
Evelina London Children’s Healthcare,
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
London, England

Dr Swan reviews the burden and molecular etiology of allergic disease in children and how early life nutrition impacts food antigen tolerance, allergy, and atopic disease. She stresses the importance of clinical history in allergy diagnosis, and presents practical examples of milk and peanut allergy. Recognizing that food allergies can lead to inadequate nutrient intake and poor growth, Dr Swan discusses the importance of maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, specialized formulas, complementary foods and dietary pattern, and the impact on onset of allergy disease and allergy management. Exposure to rather than avoidance of potential food allergens may be beneficial.
