Course Description
This activity is designed to benefit the primary care physician by providing information on the importance of glycemic control to reduce the risk of complications with diabetes. These cases will help learners to address the challenges surrounding individualizing diabetic diet including the use of meal replacements to achieve treatment goals, including weight loss.

Program Objectives:
  • Describe how failure to achieve the ADA goal of A1c of <7.0% affects the complications of diabetes
  • Explain the importance of individualizing glycemic goals in diabetes
  • Demonstrate how optimizing glycemic control (A1c and glycemic variability) changes the risk for microvascular and macrovascular complications in diabetes
  • Describe the bases for individualizing the diabetic diet including the use of meal replacements
  • Assess the utility of paired self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG)
