* Identify the effect of bed rest and immobilization on strength and function in older adults.
* Discuss the effect of dietary protein on maintenance of lean (muscle) mass in older adults.

Melissa Benton is currently an associate professor at the College of Nursing, Valdosta State University, Valdosta, GA. Dr. Benton is an advanced practice nurse and gerontological clinical nurse specialist. Dr. Benton holds a PhD from Arizona State University in curriculum and instruction with a focus on exercise and wellness. Throughout her career, she has held a variety of clinical positions in rehabilitation and has established a stronger interest and publication history in the related areas of BMI, nutrition, strength, and function in elderly individuals as well as prevention of falls in older adults. In 2010, Dr. Benton was awarded Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
Dr. Benton has been the recipient of numerous grants to foster her continued research in the areas of body composition and energy expenditure. Furthermore, she is an active reviewer of professional journals, such as the International Journal of Nursing Studies and the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, as well textbooks and conference presentations. Dr. Benton possesses a wealth of experience from her invited professional presentations and activities within professional organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine, along with various academic committees at Valdosta State University.
