Cancer is an extremely devastating disease that requires an in-depth understanding of its impact on loss of lean body mass and the need for nutrition intervention. This program focuses on the condition of cancer cachexia and the metabolic processes involved.
To present evidence based information on the role of nutrition in lean body mass.
* Discuss the importance of lean body mass.
* Review cancer cachexia and its relationship to lean body mass loss.
* Review clinical and functional outcomes related to the loss of lean body mass.
* Compare and contrast mechanisms and drivers of protein degradation and synthesis.
*Describe the effect of the inflammatory response on lean body mass loss and muscle functionality.
* Describe nutrition interventions that can impact lean body mass.
Abby Sauer, MPH, RD, LD
Research Scientist, Nutrition Science and Education, Abbott Nutrition Research & Development
Abby Sauer joined Abbott Nutrition in 1999 and is currently a Research Scientist within the Global Research & Development department where she provides global medical, clinical and scientific support to various adult therapeutic nutrition products including Ensure®, Nepro® and Suplena®. Her work includes supporting new product development and communicating scientific and technical information to consumers and customers. Her focus centers on general wellness, malnutrition, geriatric nutrition, and renal nutrition.
Prior to joining Abbott Nutrition, Abby worked as a clinical dietitian in a variety of healthcare settings, providing nutrition care to hospital patients as well as education to outpatient and community patients. Throughout her time at Abbott, she has been involved in various aspects of the business including medical affairs, clinical research and nutrition science and education.
Abby is a frequent presenter on various nutrition topics and represents Abbott Nutrition at seminars and meetings. She also writes and reviews nutrition articles for internal and external communications, and she also serves as a member of professional nutrition organizations and work groups. Most recently, she was a member of the Food Fortification and Supplements Work Group for the American Dietetic Association Evidence Analysis Library.
Abby earned her BS in dietetics from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and completed her dietetic internship at Barnes Jewish Christian Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She also earned a Masters in Public Health from The Ohio State University.
