Optimal Design of Cohort Studies for Maximum Learning

Publish Date: 2011
Author(s): Keith Godfrey, PhD, FRCP,

Animal studies show that early life exposures can induce developmental plastic responses, with major long-term consequences for a wide range of metabolic pathways relevant to human health. Well-designed cohort studies are needed to define which exposures underlie the link between impaired human fetal development and susceptibility to later non-communicable diseases. Drs Godfrey and Hanson explain the important differences between observational cohort studies and randomized controlled trials and describe key elements to consider when designing and interpreting observational studies.
