Course Description:

In this course, you’ll identify body composition assessment tools for pediatric patients; discuss the need for early identification of nutritional risk; review nutrition interventions to support catch-up growth; and describe the causes and consequences of faltering growth and windows of opportunity for catch-up growth. Originally presented at the Nutrition & Growth Conference on 27 August 2020.

Course Objectives:

• Identify appropriate, reliable and valid body composition assessment tools for pediatric patients. 
• Discuss the need for early identification of nutritional risk and further assessment. 
• Review nutrition intervention to support catch-up growth while minimizing long-term health risks. 
• Describe the causes and consequences of faltering growth and windows of opportunity for catch-up growth.

Luise joined Southampton Children’s Hospital in 2013, working clinically in Neonatal / Paediatric Intensive Care and Cardiology. Prior to this she spent 15 years working in various academic hospitals in South Africa, of which four years were spent as the dietetic manager at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, in Cape Town. 

Following her return to the UK, she completed a PhD fellowship at Imperial College London, considering the role of HSP70 and the relationship to glutamine in the critically ill child. Luise has a HEE/NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Fellowship considering “Growth and nutrition of infants with congenital heart disease: development of guidelines and a digital home monitoring programme to support families”. She is the current Chair of the British Dietetic Association Paediatric Cardiology Interest Group. 

Luise has published several peer reviewed articles and book chapters and is involved in collaborative research projects within the Children’s Hospital. Luise’s research interest aims to characterise the nutritional journey of infants and children with acute and chronic disease with a focus on those with congenital heart disease, and how the development of pragmatic pathways for nutritional rehabilitation could promote healthy growth and reduce parental stress.

Dr. Dan Nemet is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel where he also serves as an Associate Dean. He is the co-founder and Director of the Child Health and Sports Center at the Meir Medical Center. The center is a multi-disciplinary center focused on the research and clinical aspects of the interaction between children, development, growth, nutrition and physical activity. The center uses exercise as the mainstay of treating pediatric chronic disease (such as obesity, asthma, attention deficient disorders etc.). The center also assists young competitive athletes and serves the community in developing educational programs to promote healthy lifestyle and well-being.
