In this course, you’ll learn about new evidence on the benefits of early, individualized nutrition intervention in hospitalized patients; identify the impact of enteral nutrition; and learn strategies to incorporate evidence and guidelines for early, individualized nutrition intervention into clinical practice. Dr. Kelly Tappenden is Professor and Head of the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Tappenden’s research program focuses on intestinal failure, mechanisms of intestinal adaptation and patient malnutrition. For these contributions, she has received multiple awards, published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and delivered over 400 invited lectures. Dr. Tappenden served as the 33rd President of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition in 2008-09, Chair of the Nutrition, Metabolism and Obesity section of the American Gastroenterology Association Institute from 2009-13 and represents the American Society for Nutrition on the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. Currently, she is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

Philipp Schuetz was born in Switzerland and is a board-certified internist and endocrinologist. He obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the Harvard School of Public Health Boston while doing clinical research at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). He currently has a professorship from the Swiss National Foundation and works clinically at the Medical University department at the Kantonsspital Aarau in the emergency department and the Endocrine unit; and is in charge of clinical studies focusing on clinical nutrition (EFFORT), as well as on improved triage and management of patients throughout their hospital stay with the use of novel biomarkers.

Ainsley Malone is currently a Clinical Practice Specialist with the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), an organization dedicated to safe, efficacious and high-quality nutrition care. Ms. Malone is also a Dietitian member of the Nutrition Support Team at Mt. Carmel West Hospital in Columbus, Ohio where she is involved in the management of patients requiring enteral and parenteral nutrition. Ainsley is a leader in malnutrition related activities both nationally and internationally. She served as a representative to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Malnutrition Workgroup and also served on the 2017-2018 Ohio Malnutrition Prevention Commission whose charge was to address malnutrition in the older adult across all Ohio settings.
