Course Description:
In this course, you’ll learn about the role of medical nutrition therapy and diabetes-specific nutritional formulas (DSNF) to improve outcomes in people with diabetes; discuss the need for global consensus on the use of medical nutrition therapy for people with diabetes; and review the new global consensus statement on the impact of medical nutrition therapy and DSNF on metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors. Jeffrey I. Mechanick, MD, FACP, FACN, ECNU, MACE
Dr Mechanick received his MD degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, completed his Internal Medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine and completed an Endocrine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr Mechanick has authored over 300 publications in Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Nutrition Support. He was the 2016-2017 President of the American College of Endocrinology, 2013-2014 Past President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and 2005-2006 Past President of the American Board of Physician Nutrition Support Specialists. Dr Mechanick co-edited Nutritional Strategies for the Diabetic and Prediabetic Patient; Power of Prevention: The Complete Guide to Lifelong Nutrition; Thyroid Cancer: From Emergent Biotechnology to Clinical Practice Guidelines; Molecular Nutrition- the Practical Guide, and Lifestyle Medicine- A Manual for Clinical Practice; and co-authored Diabetes Mellitus Pocket and Nutritional Medicine Pocket Guide.
Dr Mechanick was appointed as a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) Science Board for 2010-2013 and was the 2013-2015 Editor-In-Chief of the PCFSN quarterly publication Elevate Health. Dr Mechanick also chairs the International Transcultural Diabetes Nutrition Algorithm Working Group and Served as the Chair of the Board of Visitors for the College of Computer, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences at the University of Maryland at College Park. He was the 2011 recipient of the University of Maryland Industry Impact Award and the Biology Alumnus Award.
