In this 7-minute video, Dr. Mezoff discusses the role of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in developing a healthy immune system during the first few years of life. The GI tract provides an interface that allows the infant to establish immune homeostasis. The three layers of defense in the GI tract are explained and include physical, cellular and adaptive immunity.

Dr Ethan Mezoff is a Board-Certified Pediatric Gastroenterologist and an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University. He is also a member of the physician team for the Center for Intestinal Rehabilitation and Nutrition Support at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition. He received his medical degree from Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and has been in practice for over 10 years. He has been awarded grants and numerous honors and is widely published in the area of human milk oligosaccharides.
