Cachexia in Cancer

Abstract:

The metabolic events surrounding cachexia in cancer differ greatly from those in starvation, with muscle loss reflecting the former and fat loss reflecting the latter. Stand-alone nutrition intervention is unlikely to prevent the development of cachexia as it will restore only body fat. Therefore, special focus should be paid to understanding and intervening in the catabolic events leading to muscle loss. This presentation discusses the most effective strategies to block catabolism, and thereby increase survival, function and quality of life in cancer patients.
