Publish Date: 2012
Author(s): Rob M. van Dam, PhD

Abstract:

More than half of all people with diabetes today live in Asian countries, creating the potential to overwhelm the capacity of healthcare systems in Asia in the near future. Dr. van Dam summarizes the burden of type 2 diabetes in Asian populations, risk factors for type 2 diabetes, the effect of lifestyle interventions on diabetes, and the population-wide approaches for the prevention of type 2 diabetes. He compares the strengths of high-risk and population approaches for the prevention of type 2 diabetes, and illustrates the role of education and environmental changes for the lifestyle prevention of type 2 diabetes.
