Nourish the Muscle, Impact Clinical Outcomes

Studies have suggested positive effects of protein supplementation, through foods rich in protein, protein supplements or oral nutritional supplements, on muscle protein synthesis, muscle mass and muscle strength. Research has also shown that supplementation with β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB)—produced naturally in the body from the essential amino acid leucine—positively impacts lean body mass. Dr Deutz presents new findings from The NOURISH Study.* High protein oral nutritional supplements containing HMB (HP-HMB) in malnourished, cardiopulmonary patients aged 65 years or older was shown to reduce the risk of mortality by 50% through 90 days post-hospital discharge. HP-HMB supplementation also improved nutritional status, body weight, and vitamin D levels over standard diet within 90 days of hospital discharge. New data on blood protein markers and grip strength are also discussed.
