Dr. Gomes is a UK Registered Dietitian, holds an undergraduate degree in Nutritional Sciences from University of Porto and a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from King´s College London. She gathers a wide range of clinical and research experiences obtained in 5 countries: Portugal, Belgium, UK, Switzerland and USA. During the past 12 years, her areas of expertise included nutrition after stroke, identification and management of disease-related malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, systematic reviews and guideline development. She authors dozens of peer-reviewed articles published in scientific journals, including "The Lancet".
In 2015, she joined the research team of Prof. Philipp Schuetz in Switzerland, with whom she coordinated the development of the ESPEN guidelines on nutritional support for polymorbid medical patients, and collaborated in the large EFFORT study, which assessed the effect of individualized nutritional support in more than 2000 malnourished medical inpatients. In 2018, she moved to New York City and since then she has been working in international nutrition as a Program Manager at the New York Academy of Sciences (Nutrition Science Program), while remaining active in clinical nutrition research.
