Course Description:

In this course, you’ll review the role of nutrition in ERAS protocols; discuss how immunonutrition can be integrated into ERAS protocols; and identify ways to incorporate nutrition-based ERAS protocols into practice. This program was originally presented at the ASPEN 2019 Nutrition Science & Practice Conference.

Dr Awad is a professor, the Vice-Chair for Surgical Quality and Safety, and the Chief of Surgical Critical Care at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas. Dr. Awad has worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs since 2000. He has served as the Operative Care Line Associate Executive, Chief of General Surgery, and as the Medical Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the MEDVAMC. His areas of specialty include: liver, pancreas, and acute care surgery; as well as minimally invasive surgical procedures. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and is a member of the Association for Academic Surgeons, the Society of University Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the Surgical Infection Society, and the Society for Critical Care Medicine.

Dr Evans is Director of Nutrition Support Services, Trauma Medical Director, and Associate Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. He has a busy clinical practice focusing on trauma, emergency general surgery, endoscopy, and critical care. His special interests include nutrition support in surgical and ICU patients and research in surgery and trauma care. He is an investigator in multiple clinical trials in critically ill patients focused in the areas of nutrition and infection and is author of over 90 peer-reviewed publications.

Dr Porter-Starr is an Assistant Professor at Duke University School of Medicine, and a Research Health Scientist in geriatric research at Durham VA Medical Center in North Carolina. Dr Porter-Starr is Co-Director of the Center for Aging Clinical Nutrition Laboratory. Her research and professional experience has been focused on community-dwelling older adults at high risk for chronic health conditions and functional disability. Currently, she is a co-PI for clinical research trials investigating the impact of meal-based protein on lean muscle mass in obese, frail older adults, and the PI for a career development award assessing the benefits of perioperative protein supplementation in vulnerable geriatric populations. Finally, she serves as a content expert for the ASPEN Surgical Nutrition Evidence Based Guidelines.t
