Course Description:

In this course, Elaina Jurecki, MS, RD, FAND will review recent literature addressing the balance between intact protein and medical food protein; evaluate appropriate biomarkers to monitor outcomes; discuss research addressing the impact of the gut microbiome and the use of nitrogen-scavenger drugs to improve outcomes; and more! Originally presented live at the 19th Abbott Metabolic Conference on May 18, 2023, in San Antonio, TX.

Course Objectives:

• Review recent literature addressing the balance between intact protein and medical food protein. 
• Evaluate appropriate biomarkers to monitor outcomes. 
• Discuss research addressing the impact of the gut microbiome and the use of nitrogen-scavenger drugs to improve outcomes. 
• Evaluate the effect of propionic acid and metabolites on mitochondrial function and potential treatments. 
• Discuss current and novel therapies, including liver transplantation, and those under investigation.

Elaina Jurecki, MS, RD, FAND

Elaina Jurecki, MS, RD, FAND is the Science Director for the National PKU Alliance nonprofit organization and works as a consultant to biotech companies and other nonprofit organizations for inborn errors of metabolism. She previously worked as an Executive Director at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. and as a Metabolic Dietitian Manager for Northern California Kaiser Permanente. 

Elaina Jurecki is the Co-Chair of the Organic Acidemia Nutritional Guideline Committee. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles, several book chapters, and numerous presentations in the rare disease space. Her professional interests include scientific communications, clinical outcome assessment tool development, and clinical trial protocol design focusing on nutritional and clinical outcome data collection and management. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in biochemistry and Michigan State University in nutritional science.
