Course Description:

In this course, John L Sievenpiper, MD, MSc, PhD, FRCPC will review the “carbohydrate-insulin” model and the evidence for “lo-carb” versus “hi-carb” diets; define the 4 domains of carbohydrate quality: Lo-GI/GL/GR, hi-fibre, “food-based” approaches (whole grains, pulses, fruit), and low sugars; assess the clinical evidence supporting the cardiometabolic benefits of the 4 domains of carbohydrate quality; and more! Originally presented at the 117th Abbott Nutrition Research Conference on June 21, 2018.

Course Objectives:

• Describe the “carbohydrate-insulin” model and the evidence for “lo-carb” versus “hi-carb” diets.
• Define the 4 domains of carbohydrate quality: Lo-GI/GL/GR, hi-fibre, “food-based” approaches (whole grains, pulses, fruit), and low sugars.
• Assess the clinical evidence supporting the cardiometabolic benefits of the 4 domains of carbohydrate quality.
• Review the interactions of different phenotypes/genotypes with domains of carbohydrate quality.
• Explain the unintended consequences of a singular focus on carbohydrates and the clinical translation of carbohydrate quality.
  • Run Time: 48
