Course Description:

In this course, Joyce Black, PhD, RN, FAAN and Mary Litchford, PhD, RDN, LDN will identify evidence-based practices and nationally recognized guidelines for the management of pressure injuries (PIs) as they relate to patients with diabetes; list the key nutrition interventions associated with the management of PIs; review the role of SPIPP-Adult 2.0 in PI management and discuss how implementing nutrition-related protocols can improve patient outcomes. Originally presented live at the ASPEN 2024 Nutrition Science and Practice Conference on March 3, 2024.

Course Objectives:

• Identify evidence-based practices and nationally recognized guidelines for the management of pressure injuries (Pls) as they relate to patients with diabetes. 
• List the key nutrition interventions associated with the management of PIs and discuss how they specifically apply to patients with diabetes. 
• Review the role of SPIPP-Adult 2.0 in PI management and discuss how implementing nutrition-related protocols can improve patient outcomes.

Mary Litchford, PhD, RDN, LDN

Mary Litchford, PhD, RDN, LDN is an internationally recognized speaker, author, and consultant to health care providers. She received her PhD in human nutrition from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Her professional career has included clinical practice, university teaching, and business consulting. She is president of CASE Software & Books, a professional and educational resource company. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and served on the Academy’s Evidence Analysis Work Groups on wound care and hydration. In 2018, she received the Academy’s Excellence in Practice Award for Consultation and Business Practice. She is currently the Immediate Past President of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel and serves as one of the NPUAP representatives on the International Clinical Practice Guidelines Governance Group.

Joyce Black, PhD, RN, FAAN, is President of the NPIAP. She is also a chaired professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Nursing, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate students in nursing, physical therapy, and pharmacy.

Ashley Bronston, MS, RDN, LDN, is a Program Manager at the Abbott Nutrition Health Institute, where she develops nutrition-focused continuing education programs for healthcare professionals. Notably, in 2017, Ashley was honored with the Innovators Achievement Award from the International Council on Active Aging for her work in creating and pilot-testing a nutrition-based fall prevention curriculum for older adults. She holds a Master’s degree in Medical Dietetics from The Ohio State University and a dual major Bachelor’s degree from Mansfield University in Dietetics and Sports Nutrition.
