Course Description:

In this course, you’ll describe the role and importance of perioperative nutrition; provide examples of health economics outcomes research that investigate the role of surgical nutrition; and provide practical guidance and best practice recommendations on ways to successfully implement and evaluate hospital-based surgical nutrition quality improvement programs. Originally presented at the 2020 Virtual Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Conference.

Course Objectives:

•Describe the role and importance of perioperative nutrition.
•Provide examples of HEOR that investigate the role surgical nutrition can have on patients’ health and economic outcomes.
•Review the role of HEOR in studying surgical nutrition.
•Provide practical guidance and best practice recommendations on ways to successfully implement and evaluate hospital-based surgical nutrition quality improvement programs.

Cory joined Abbott Nutrition in April 2020. As a Senior Analyst, Cory participates in the design and implementation of studies examining the impact of malnutrition, oral nutritional supplementation, and nutrition-focused quality improvement programs on patient wellbeing and healthcare costs. Prior to joining Abbott, Cory worked for the University of Cincinnati Health where he led and facilitated value analysis for both clinical and supply chain projects. Cory has also spent time as a Registered Nurse at Trihealth Good Samaritan Hospital’s cardiovascular intensive care unit. Cory has a Master of Science in Health Economics and Clinical Outcomes Research from Xavier University. and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati.

Kirk Kerr, PhD

Kirk W. Kerr joined the Abbott Nutrition’s Health Economics and Outcomes Research team in June 2019. While at Abbott, Kirk has researched the impact of nutrition-focused Quality Improvement programs in inpatient, outpatient, and surgical care settings. Prior to joining Abbott, Kirk worked in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research researching the impact of FDA policies on drug development, drug prices, and patient access to medicines. While at FDA, he also provided economic support for FDA’s Generic Drug User Fee (GDUFA) and Biosimilar User Fee (BsUFA) negotiating teams. He also worked as an economic consultant on antitrust and intellectual property matters. Kirk has a PhD and MA in Economics from Ohio State University, and BS and MA in Economics from the University of Missouri.

Cheryl is a Master’s prepared Cardiac Surgery Care Coordinator Nurse at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. Cheryl has over 30 years of nursing experience with increasing levels of responsibility in several hospitals throughout the New England area. In her current role she collaborates and integrates with a multidisciplinary team across the care continuum to facilitate evidence-based care for cardiac surgery patients. Cheryl’s passion is in improving the quality of healthcare and ultimately enhancing the patient pre and post-operative experience. Cheryl has been asked to present on reducing readmissions in forums such as the Annual Multidisciplinary Cardiovascular and Thoracic Critical Care Conference, Sigma Theta Tau 30th International Nursing Research Congress, American Association for Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting 2019, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, 15th Annual Multidisciplinary Cardiovascular and Thoracic Critical Care Conference, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Clinical Nurse Leader Summit.
