The Protein-Energy Wasting Syndrome in Chronic Kidney Disease
Course Description:In this course, you’ll review the prevalence of protein-energy wasting (PEW) in chronic kidney disease (CKD); discuss the causes of anorexia and undernutrition that lead to PEW; discuss the causes of inflammation and hypermetabolism that lead to PEW; and describe the implications of PEW on important patient outcomes.
Course Objectives:• Review the prevalence of protein-energy wasting (PEW) in chronic kidney disease.
• Discuss the causes of anorexia and undernutrition that lead to PEW.
• Discuss the causes of inflammation and hypermetabolism that lead to PEW.
• Describe the implications of PEW on important patient outcomes.

His interest areas on nutritional management involve dietary quality, diagnostic and prognostic validity of nutritional screening and assessment tools and the value of monitoring of nutritional biomarkers as well as inflammation-driven catabolic disorders. His other interests are medication errors, drug safety and effectiveness. Dr. Carrero has published his research in over 450 peer-reviewed articles, as well as numerous book chapters. He serves as co-chair of the TNT Renal Program of the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM) and is the chair of the European Renal Nutrition working group of the European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplantation Association (ERA-EDTA).
