Course Description:

In this course, Mary Litchford, PhD, RDN, LDN and Joyce Pittman, PhD, ANP-BC, FNP-BC, CWOCN, FAAN will identify the role of nutrition in wound healing and nutrition care strategies to enhance recovery in patients with pressure injuries; discuss key nutrition-related care updates from the 2019 Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers/Injuries: Clinical Practice Guidelines; and determine best practices for implementation of the new guidelines. To provide optimal nutrition care in clinical practice. Originally presented as a live webinar on July 30, 2020.

Mary Litchford, PhD, RDN, LDN, is an internationally recognized speaker, author, and consultant to health care providers. She received her PhD in human nutrition from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Her professional career has included clinical practice, university teaching, and business consulting. She is president of CASE Software & Books, a professional and educational resource company. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and served on the Academy’s Evidence Analysis Work Groups on wound care and hydration. In 2018 she received the Academy’s Excellence in Practice Award for Consultation and Business Practice. She is currently the Immediate Past President of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel and serves as one of the NPUAP representatives on the International Clinical Practice Guidelines Governance Group.

Dr Joyce Pittman has over 40 years in clinical practice including 20+ years as a certified Wound, Ostomy, Continence (WOC) nurse and 17 years as a Nurse Practitioner. Currently, Dr Pittman is an Associate Professor at the University of South Alabama with a focus on research regarding ostomy conditions and QOL, pressure injury prevention, and building collaboration between academic and healthcare clinical settings. Until 2019, Dr Pittman supported the work of the WOC team at Indiana University Health-Academic Health Center and Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis, IN. Dr Pittman is past Deputy Editor for the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing and is current Vice President of the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) and a member of the Guideline Governance Group for the Prevention & Treatment of Pressure Ulcers/Injuries: Clinical Practice Guideline. She has authored numerous journal articles, WOCN Core Curriculum chapters, is a national speaker regarding WOC conditions and issues, and is a consultant regarding complex wound and ostomy management. Dr Pittman’s practice and research are focused on improving the quality of life of those individuals with wound, ostomy, and continence conditions.
