Course Description:

In this course, you’ll learn about maternal risk factors, epidemiology, and screening methods for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM); review dietary guidelines for the management of GDM; and briefly discuss new technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring. This program was originally presented at the 117th Abbott Nutrition Research Conference.

Helen Murphy, MD is a Professor of Women’s Health at King’s College London, Professor of Medicine (Diabetes and Antenatal Care) at the University of East Anglia, and a practicing clinician (Cambridge University NHS Foundation Trust since 2006, Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust since 2015). Dr. Murphy completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Obstetrics (MB BCh BAO) and MD at University College Dublin, Ireland. She is the 2012 recipient of the Janet Kinson Award for outstanding contributions to diabetes care (Diabetes UK) and the 2011 recipient of Joseph Hoet Research Award (Diabetes Pregnancy Study Group of the European Association for Study of Diabetes). Today, she directs a diabetes pregnancy research program which aims to improve the glucose control and infant health outcomes of pregnant women with diabetes. Her research interests include improving maternal dietary intake, expanding preconception care and developing diabetes pregnancy technology. Dr. Murphy’s work on automated insulin delivery and continuous glucose monitoring is changing the clinical management of diabetes in pregnancy with landmark publications in leading clinical journals (NEJM 2016, Lancet 2017).
