Course Description:

In this course, Laura Andromalos, MS, RD, RN, CSOWM, CDCES will discuss the concepts of weight stigma and the obesity paradox in critically ill patients; review the available screening and assessment methods suitable for critical care patients with obesity; and identify practical approaches for clinicians for early nutrition screening and assessment in the ICU. Originally presented as a live webinar on August 22, 2022.

Laura Andromalos has 13 years’ experience in obesity and diabetes management. She is currently finishing nursing school and is excited to continue supporting patients in a dual clinician role. She was previously the clinical nutrition manager at the University of Minnesota Medical Center where she managed a team of 31 dietitians in the inpatient and outpatient settings and supported clinical nutrition initiatives and quality improvement. She has also worked as a bilingual certified diabetes educator coach in the telehealth setting with Cecelia Health, as the bariatric coordinator at Northwest Weight and Wellness Center in Everett, Washington, and the bariatric nutrition manager at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Ms. Andromalos’ research has focused on patient education before and after bariatric surgery; she has presented widely on nutrition optimization for people with obesity and type 2 diabetes. She holds leadership positions in the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group (WM DPG) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Ms. Andromalos is also a member of the Exam Committees for the CSOWM and CDCES credentials. In recent years, Ms. Andromalos received the ASMBS Excellence in Nutrition Award and the WM DPG Excellence in Emerging Practice Award.
