Course Description:

In this course, the faculty will describe the role of MUAC as a useful anthropometric measure for assessing undernutrition; explain the role of the nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE) in pediatric malnutrition; define bioavailability and its impact on childhood growth; and more! Originally presented live at the 10th International Conference on Nutrition and Growth in London, UK.

Course Objectives:

• Describe the role of MUAC as a useful anthropometric measure for assessing undernutrition. 
• Explain the role of the nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE) in pediatric malnutrition identification and diagnosis. 
• Review two case examples highlighting the importance of NFPE in pediatric malnutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring & evaluation. 
• Define bioavailability and discuss the consequences of poor bioavailability and its impact on childhood growth and development. 
• Review the impact of malnutrition on nutrient absorption and utilization.

Dan Nemet is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel, where he also serves as Associate Dean. Dr Nemet is the Co-founder and Director of the Child Health and Sports Center at the Meir Medical Center, a multidisciplinary center focused on research and clinical aspects of the interaction between child development, nutrition, growth, and physical activity.

Holly Van Poots, RDN, CSP, FAND, is a private practice dietitian specializing in integrative nutrition care throughout the lifespan. Her practice, Be Balanced Nutrition, LLC, is part of an integrative performance center in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where she collaborates with two functional chiropractors, a massage therapist, and a pilates and dynamic neuromuscular stabilization trainer. She has over 15 years of experience working with acutely ill children in several large health systems and has been a Board-Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition since 2006. She has served as a subject matter expert for the Commission on Dietetic Registration's Pediatric Specialty Exam and has been a member of the advisory committee for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Dietetic Internship Program. She became a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (FAND) in 2015.

Dr John Stutts is a native of Louisville, Kentucky. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Purdue University. He then received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Louisville. He completed his Pediatric Residency, Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship and Master of Public Health from Vanderbilt University. He is currently practicing Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in Louisville. He has been a part of many clinical trials in his tenure including many studies with the Norton Children’s Medical Pediatric Clinical Research Unit. He is a past member of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition Professional Education Committee, and he is a current member of the Public Education Committee for the same society.
