In this course, you’ll review clinical studies supporting the immune benefits of 2'-fucosyllactose human milk oligosaccharide (2'-FL HMO); discuss preclinical evidence of 2'-FL HMO effects on food allergy and potential mechanisms of action; and describe the possible role of 2'-FL HMO in enhancing oral tolerance. Barbara Marriage is the global science lead for Pediatric Specialty Nutrition and a senior associate research fellow at Abbott Nutrition. She was previously an associate director in Global Regulatory Science and Innovation and manager of the Pediatric Clinical Nutrition group in Scientific and Medical Affairs. In her present role, she is responsible for clinical research and scientific support for pediatric specialty products globally. Barbara received a BSc in applied human nutrition from the University of Guelph and an MSc in nutrition and a PhD in medical sciences from the University of Alberta. Before joining Abbott in 2002, she worked for over 20 years as a clinical research dietitian with extensive experience in pediatric nutrition and management of patients and families with inborn errors of metabolism. Her research interests include early programming, childhood obesity, maternal health, allergy, and inborn errors of metabolism. Dr Marriage has published over 35 articles in peer-reviewed journals, written book chapters and newsletters, and has given many presentations on nutrition related topics.

Dr Paul Forsythe obtained his BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry MSc in Laboratory Medicine and PhD in Mast Cell Immunopharmacology from Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland. Following his PhD he undertook a post-doctoral fellowship with the Pulmonary Research Group at the University of Alberta (1999-2003). He continued his post-doctoral training at the Brain-Body Institute, McMaster University before joining the Faculty of Medicine in 2008. Dr Forsythe’s research explores the neuro-immuno-endocrine super-system, with a focus on identifying mechanisms underlying the influence of gut microbes, and their products on the development of diverse pathophysiological responses such as inflammation, allergic disease and mood disorders. A major focus of his work has been on obtaining an understanding of the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of gut microbes and their products in allergy and asthma.

Dr. Karyn Wulf is Pediatric Medical Director at Abbott. She has worked clinically for 16 years as a general pediatrician in emergency medicine. She maintains her clinical activities at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on a part-time basis. At Abbott, Karyn supports the pediatric portfolio thru external engagement of key opinion leaders, health care practitioners, and pediatric societies. Additionally, she oversees clinical trials, and collaborates with nutrition science and basic science innovation platforms. She is passionate about medical education and works closely with Abbott Nutrition Health institute, an online unbranded nutrition education site for health care practitioners. Karyn graduated with honors from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine with a dual degree in Medicine and Public Health in 1999. She completed her internship and residency in general pediatrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2002.
