Dr. White is an emeritus professor in the Department of Family Medicine and holds joint appointments in the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the College of Medicine, Memphis. She received her undergraduate degree from St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans, LA; completed her dietetic internship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA; and her doctorate at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. She is the author of numerous publications, audio and videotapes, webinars on topics germane to clinical nutrition practice and family medicine.
Dr. White is a past president of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), past speaker of its House of Delegates, and has held numerous elected and appointed positions within ADA at the district, sate, practice group, and national level. She is a recipient of the ADA Medallion and Copher Awards. Dr. White sits on the ADA Coding and Coverage Committee, serves as the MS-DRG Malnutrition Workgroup chair, represents ADA on the Advisory Committee to the AMA Current Procedural Terminology/RVS Update Committee CPT/RUC Coding Panel as its Health Care Providers Advisory Committee (HCPAC) representative, and serves as the AMA HCPAC RUC alternate co-chair.
As a member of the Department of Family Medicine for the past 36 years, Dr. White has had considerable opportunity to interact with faculty and residents in the delivery of medical care to patients. She is routinely involved in assessing resident performance in all areas of family medicine and in teaching and evaluating the implementation of evidence-based nutrition-care guidelines to maintain health and to enhance self-management nutrition knowledge and skills in patients with multiple chronic disease states. She also works with the ADA and the members of its local and state chapters regarding CPT codes/code use and with the department's billing and coding personnel in educating faculty and residents about correct coding practices. Dr. White is well versed in the provision of medical nutrition therapy for the prevention and treatment of common nutritional problems at all stages of life and in their multiple manifestations in the majority of clinical and community settings.
Elaine Amella is a professor in the College of Nursing at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Amella received her bachelor's degree from Pace University, her master's and doctorate in nursing from New York University, and was previously on faculty at New York University and the University of Arizona. Prepared as an advanced practice nurse in geriatrics, Dr. Amella specialized in nursing and interdisciplinary care of older adults for over 30 years. She received several honors including the Southern Nursing Research Society Hartford Institute Geriatric Nursing Award and a fellowship at the John A. Hartford Geriatric Nursing Institute. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and the Gerontological Society of America. She presents nationally and internationally and is widely published in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Amella has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for community and institutionally based interventions to help caregivers manage meals for individuals with dementia, the USDA for testing of rural nutrition and food safety training programs, the HRSA Bureau of Health Professions for training undergraduate nursing students in the concepts of geriatrics, and has had New York state and university funding. Dr. Amella is the regional editor for North America for the Journal of Clinical Nursing and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, and the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging. She is active at the national level in several major nursing organizations.
