Preoperative Standard Oral Nutrition Supplements vs Immunonutrition: Results of a Systematic Review and Meta-Analaysis

Publish Date: November 2014
Author(s): Refaat A. Hegazi, Deborah S. Hustead, David C. Evans

This meta-analysis demonstrates no significant difference in the effect of preoperative immunonutrition (IN) as compared to standard oral nutritional supplements (ONS) on postoperative clinical outcomes. Given the high costs, poor palatability, and limited retail availability of IN products, standard ONS can be a reasonable preoperative alternative. Standard ONS are inexpensive, widely available, and manufactured by multiple vendors in a variety of flavors to suite various tastes. The results suggest that preoperative standard ONS is similar to IN.
