HMB Supplements to Counteract Muscle Loss in Patients with Cancer

Low muscle mass is prevalent among patients with cancer and is a predictor of adverse clinical outcomes. To counteract muscle loss, supplements containing βeta-hydroxy βeta-methylbutyrate, or HMB, have been proposed as a potential therapy. HMB is a metabolite of leucine that positively impacts muscle mass though promoting muscle protein synthesis and reducing muscle protein breakdown. This video summarizes a systematic review that investigated the effects and safety of HMB supplementation on outcomes in patients with cancer.
