Advances in Muscle Health and Nutrition

Date: 18 January 2023
Watch Video

A video summary of an article that explores how malnutrition and low muscle mass negatively impact the health of many older adults and those with acute and chronic diseases; and, how both are associated with physical impairment, falls, fractures, increased length of hospital stay, inadequate wound healing, poor quality of life and reduced survival.

The risk of muscle loss increases with advanced age and hospitalization, especially for those in the intensive care unit (ICU). Measurement of body composition is essential for early detection of muscle loss and intervention. This video will explain body composition measurement techniques and surrogate approaches for muscle mass assessment when body composition techniques are not available. Additionally, the importance of nutrition as part of a multimodal approach for at-risk patients and key nutrients and ingredients needed for nutritional intervention are also discussed.

The original article, “Advances in muscle health and nutrition: A toolkit for healthcare professionals,” was published in Clinical Nutrition in October 2022.
