Course Description:

In this article, you’ll identify challenges to providing optimal nutrition care to oncology patients; describe the importance of early nutrition intervention and how it can benefit the oncology patient; define the role and responsibility of registered dietitian nutritionists on the multidisciplinary care team; and identify ways to expand oncology nutrition programs through a multidisciplinary team approach.

Rhone M. Levin, MEd, RDN, CSO, LD, FAND

Rhone has been a clinical registered dietitian nutritionist for over 30 years, specializing in oncology nutrition for the past 22 years. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and the Pennsylvania State University. Rhone is a fellow in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and is a board-certified specialist in oncology. Rhone has made key contributions to the profession, including a leadership role in the development of the Board Certification Examination for Oncology Dietitians. She is the coauthor of the Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance for Oncology Dietitians; and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics symptom management guide, The Complete Resource Kit for Oncology. In addition, she is the author of Malnutrition Screening and Nutrition Assessment of the Oncology Patient in the Oncology Nutrition for Clinical Practice and was instrumental in developing the Evidence Analysis Library and Guidelines on Oncology Nutrition. Rhone lives in Durham, NC and is a part of the Duke University Hospital adult nutrition team.

Liz received a bachelor’s in dietetics from Brigham Young University and a Masters in Health Science with a health promotion emphasis from Boise State University. She has been a registered dietitian for over 10 years. In her early career, she provided nutrition education in the hospital and ambulatory setting. Most of her career has been spent working in outpatient oncology clinics. She has authored an article for Oncology Nutrition Connection titled, "The Impact of the Caregiver on the Oncology Patient." Liz currently lives in Meridian, Idaho and is part of the oncology nutrition team for St. Luke’s.

Jeannine Mills, MS, RDN, CSO, LD

Jeannine received her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition and Foods at Virginia Tech University and Master of Science degree in Nutrition at University of New Haven, CT. For over 20 years, she has worked as one of the outpatient oncology dietitians at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Currently, she works more directly with patients with gastrointestinal cancers. She is a volunteer member of the Oncology Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group (ON DPG), a national group promoting direction and leadership for quality oncology nutrition practice through education and research. She serves on a national working committee (NACHOS) in promoting access to nutrition care for patients at cancer centers within the US. Jeannine serves on the leadership team for the newly formed Oncology Section of ASPEN. She is a member of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Review Board for Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN).
