  • Dr Susan Prescott suggested that the increasing incidence of childhood allergies may be a “canary in the coal mine” for harmful dietary and environmental changes. (p. 3)
  • Dr Niklas Timby, Dr Nicolas Olea, and Dr Marie Carmen Collado discussed why human milk is considered the gold standard for feeding infants up to age 6 months, and presented what researchers have newly discovered about functional ingredients of human milk. (p. 4)
  • Dr Philip Calder, Dr Ardythe Morrow, and Dr Christina West explored the next frontier of pediatric nutrition in a review of roles for human milk oligosaccharides, prominent components of human milk. (p. 5)
  • Dr David Hackam addressed why life-threatening necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is more likely to affect prematurely-born infants than full-term infants. Surprisingly, the link between prematurity and NEC is a transmembrane protein called the toll-like receptor. (p. 6)
  • Dr Richard Cummings described how dietary carotenoids play a crucial role in development of vision and cognition. The carotenoid lutein has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. (p. 7)
