In this course, faculty will review the impact of malnutrition and muscle loss on clinical outcomes in patients with cancer; summarise body composition techniques for muscle mass assessment and implications for clinical practice; and identify new clinical data on protein and hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB) as interventions for patients with cancer. Maurizio Muscaritoli, MD
Paula Ravasco, MD, RD, MSc, PhD
Dr Ravasco has a degree in Nutritional Sciences, in Nutrition and Food Engineering, as well as her Master's and PhD at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. She is a Professor of Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Research at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, a Coordination Board member of the Master’s in Clinical Nutrition, and a Principal Investigator at the Unit of Nutrition and Metabolism of the Institute of Molecular Medicine, her area of special interest is oncology.
She is the recipient of 4 research grants and 7 national or international prizes in clinical research. She has been involved in various scientific activities since May 2001. She is also an active member of several professional societies in nutrition and oncology including ESPEN where she served as an author of the 2016 ESPEN practical guideline: Clinical Nutrition in Cancer. She has been a reviewer for 17 scientific journals in nutrition/medicine/oncology since 2003.
