Course Description:

In this course, Nilong Vyas, MD, MPH and Marion Margaret Aw, MD will explain the impact of sleep on childhood growth; discuss how diet composition may impact sleep quality in children; explain the concept of catch-up growth and who requires it; and summarize clinical approaches and how healthcare professionals can support growth. Originally presented live at the 11th International Conference on Nutrition and Growth on February 15, 2024.

Dr Nilong Vyas is a board-certified pediatrician. She went on to earn a Master’s in Public Health degree from Tulane University as well as a Medical Doctorate from LSU Health Sciences Center. After completing her Pediatrics residency at LSU, she worked as an ER Physician at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. She subsequently chose to join a private practice at Lake Vista Pediatrics in Lakeview, where she is following her passion for teaching families how to achieve optimal and sound sleep safely.

Marion Margaret Aw, MD

Dr Aw’s area of clinical expertise is in pediatric gastrointestinal disease, hepatology, and liver transplantation. She is a member of the National Liver Transplant Program. She also has an interest in nutrition and feeding issues in children. This led her to start the Interdisciplinary Feeding and Nutrition Clinic at NUH in 2013, and she remains the clinical lead for the program. 

Most recently, Dr Aw was Chair of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Subcommittee for the Asia Pan Pacific Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2019-2023). In addition to clinical practice, Dr Aw is actively involved in the teaching and training of medical undergraduates and post-graduate pediatric doctors. She is the Education Director for NUH and Vice Dean (Students) for the Medical School. She also serves on the Graduate Medical Education Committee as Chair of the Physician Health and Resilience Subcommittee.

John Stutts, MD, MPH, is the Medical Director of Pediatric Nutrition at Abbott. He has participated in numerous clinical trials in his tenure, including many studies with the Norton Children’s Pediatric Clinical Research Unit. He is a past member of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Professional Education, Public Education, and Professional Development Committees. Dr Stutts earned his Bachelor of Science from Purdue University and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Louisville. He completed his Pediatric Residency, Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship, and Master of Public Health from Vanderbilt University.
